For a true taste of Route 66 culture in all its shapes and colors, all basking under the glorious skies that New Mexico is known for, head west of the Rio Grande and start the ascent toward the mesa. The landscape really opens up on the westside of the city, and as you ascend “9 Mile Hill,” you’ll get to experience a blend of old and new Albuquerque. Fulfill your neon dreams and enjoy the best view of the valley, the city and the glorious Sandias, especially at sunset. As the day turns to night, the city that expands in front of your eyes begins to shimmer and twinkle… just like the stars in the sky above you.
Traveling west of the Rio Grande on Central will bring you to two historic neighborhoods, Pat Hurley and Atrisco. The views up here are spectacular. North of Central, a stroll up the narrow winding streets past gardens, animals, and irrigation ditches, will bring the traveler to Pat Hurley Park with views of the Sandias during the day and the city lights at night. If you want a good workout, take the stairs to the top. If you’re in the mood for a steak, some of the best in the city is in a hidden restaurant off Route 66: the iconic Monte Carlo Steak House. Enter the dimly lit dining room through the liquor store for a throwback experience from this locally owned joint full of memorabilia and “collectibles,” that’s been feeding locals and visitors for more than 50 years.
